The just-concluded Brufut Marathon Run is one community driven initiative that we are please to be associated with.
Going by the words of the organisers, since its inception in 1994, the event is today one of the most organized marathon runs in the country.
It has helped assist more than 350 needy students in the community, and the organisers have, over the years, supported community initiative projects in the village.
The theme selected for this year was: “Run against Hunger”.
This was a most fitting theme, considering the need to fight against global hunger, which requires a collective effort.
We commend the organisers and initiators of the now famous Brufut Marathon for their foresight in initiating this great programme.
Also, our commendation goes to all those who participated in this year’s event, thus making it a great success.
The issue of hunger is a global concern, and the only way we can tackle it is to involve people to grow their own food.
The marathon committee has come to complement the government’s efforts, not only in the area of sports but also in agriculture.
We would like to commend the Dutch duo Philippe Duterloo and Erik Berning of the World Food Programme (WFP) for supporting the Marathon Run, and also Friends of The Gambia, for making this year’s marathon successful.
