Peter Bonu Johnson, head coach of the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) has said that their aim is to retain the GFA first division league title.
Bonu and his ferry boys have struggled to rediscover their impressive form, which saw them win last year’s title, in a wonderful weekend with a convincing 2-nil victory over second-from-bottom-place Steve Biko at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium.
Speaking after his side's promising win over Biko, Bonu spoke highly of GPA's chances of reclaiming the title they won last year.
"The boys fought very hard today and they could have even done better with the score line," he said.
The former coach of the Gambia national U-20 team added: "I told the players that they can do it and I think now they have started believing in themselves that they can do it."
Asked about his preparation for his next game, Bonu said: "We respect Bakau United because they are doing well in the league but we will get ready for them to give a respectable performance because they are a team that fights from the beginning to the end."
He also urged fans of the club to have confidence and believe in the players by giving them their usual cheering support and pray as well for them always.
Bubacarr Demba, assistant coach of Steve Biko FC, said he was disappointed with the defeat, saying: "Biko have failed to stick to the game plan, which cost them the defeat."
Boris, as he is widely known, added that the problem came in the first half of the game when they conceded two goals, noting that it was very difficult for them to play their game plan because "the GPA had already got what they wanted".
"There are still games to come and I am sure we will get out of the relegation zone before the end of the first round of the league," he said the disappointed Biko assistant coach after the embarrassing defeat, which has also confirmed their nine game without a win.
Borris and his charges have vowed to put their current disastrous campaign behind them as they prepare for their next game against Samger, whose threat they are aware as the Academy boys can impose danger.
Biko have undoubtedly the impressive team in the league in terms of individual talents, especially the likes of Assan Jatta, Mustapha Sarr, Demba Sanyang, Abdou Jammeh, Hatib Kunta, to name a few, but even the introduction of the former national team players has made no difference to their campaign.
