The Gambians living in Birmingham worth emulation and a tap on the back for their continuous commitment in organising annual summer football tournament for Gambians living in the UK. The fourth much-talk about football tournament, scheduled for 11th July in Birmingham will witness the defending champions from Luton Town. Gambians in Luton spoke with optimism that they would retain the trophy for the third successful times.
It could be recalled Luton narrowly lost the trophy 2007 and won it twice, said jubilant Saihou Bawor. Birmingham organisers promised that the tournament would be a tough competition this year as (8) eight teams are ready for the day. But the well prepared Luton team, under the dynamic Coach Wandeh Njie, a one time Gambia's best goalkeeper and coach for the senior and junior Gambian national teams confirmed that Luton is not afraid to meet any team. Coach Wandeh Njie on their final preparation Sunday 5th July identified his best players. He said the training was very important to make the players have collective team work and be able to deliver accordingly. The training was very impressive to watch as some brilliant ball pass and effective exercise were done. Indeed, few of the players just need to focus and be committed to the game if they want to succeed and make football their career.
The ladies from Luton are also preparing to play with their counterparts in rounders. They are also well prepared to challenge any team ready for the game. Indeed, the spirit of the day tournament will bring Gambians across UK together, irrespective of their destinations. It would enable us to break the long silence and busy schedules, thus foster our relationship, and develop constructive ideas on how to support each other and our people back home. It's very important for Gambians living abroad to come together and share ideas as well as promote our culture.
It is important to note that Gambians in Luton has revitalised their association and working hard to host one of the best summer football tournaments in UK, scheduled for 8th August. All participating teams are kindly requested to register on time so that the event would be well organised. 8 teams would be registered for only £50.00 a team, covering their daily needs, for example, shower and changing room, sandwich, water etc. Those who wish to join can contact Luton Organising Committee, please call Cherno Jallow, commonly known as Pulo Boy on; 07958720078 or Single Joof on; 07946419259 ASAP.
