Awa Jaws’ brace inspires Red Scorpions to Women Super Cup title

Awa Jaws’ brace has taken Red Scorpions to the Gambia Football Federation’s female Super Cup title.

Red Scorpions thumped Interior 2-0 in the final played at the Serrekunda mini stadium graced by football enthusiasts in the Greater Banjul area including the Minister of Interior Ousman Sonko, the secretary of Gambia Football Federation, Abbas Bah, and the Minister of Local Government and Lands, Momodou Aki Bayo.

Awa Jawo opened the score in the 15th minute from a fantastic header after capitalizing from Penda Colley`s brilliant free-kick.

Mbassey Darboe could have equalized for Interior but her powerful shot was denied by goalkeeper Mariama Ceesay in the 65th minute of the game.

Moments later Awa Jawo got the ball twisted and turned in the center of the field before unleashing a rocket strike that flew past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper into the back of the net. The game ended 2-0 in favour of the Red Scorpions.

As winners Red Scorpions went home with a giant trophy and cash prize of D20,000 while Interior pocketed D10,000 as runners-up.

Speaking after the game, Chorro Mbenga, head coach of Red Scorpion, said she was very glad that that her side won the game 2-0.

Mbenga revealed that Interior are among the best teams that have made her to “prepare very well for the Super Cup final.

She added that they would continue to prepare well for the 2015-2016 season.
