Armed Forces yesterday morning defeated the 2009-10 Gambia Football Association division one league champions Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) 3-1 in a friendly game played at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda.
The friendly game was part of both sides’ preparatory efforts for the 2010-11 Gambia Football Association division one league season due to commence this weekend.
The mouth-watering clash was dominated and controlled by Armed Forces who took an early lead through striker Kabba Jobe when he netted in the 25th minute the game’s only goal in the first period.
Moments later, the Military squad (Armed Forces) found themselves 3-0 ahead when Baboucarr Badjan and Modou Gaye each scored in the 65th and 75th minute of the game respectively to dash GPA’s hope of any equaliser.
The ferry boys led by Coach Peter Bonu Johnson responded with a David Sambou last minute gasp but that only proved to be a consolation goal for the reigning league champions.
The defeat is a worrying sign for the former champions Ports Authority, who prepare for Saturday’s Super Cup final against the telecommunication boys, Gamtel, at the rejuvenated Banjul Mini-Stadium.
The super cup or curtain raiser marks the beginning of a new Gambia Football Association division one league season for 2010-2011.
