APRC retains Foni Jarrol constituency seat

Dec 30, 2013, 10:03 AM

The ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) has retained its seat in the National Assembly, after its candidate was nominated unopposed in the Foni Jarrol constituency.

Alhagie S Jammeh, former teacher turned politician, was nominated by the APRC to contest the bye-election in the Foni Jarrol constituency, after the former APRC MP, Borry Colley, was expelled from the party.

However, at the close of nominations on Friday held at the Independent Electoral Commission regional office in Brikama, Jammeh of the APRC was the only candidate nominated after there was no independent or opposition candidate nominated.

He was consequently declared elected as the new National Assembly Member for Foni Jarrol constituency by the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Alhagie Mustapha Carayol.

It would be recalled that Borry Colley, National Assembly Member for Foni Jarrol constituency and desk officer for West Coast Region, was expelled by the APRC, after the party said in a statement earlier this month that it, ‘‘will never entertain members that do not have the interest of the country at heart or indulge in acts inimical to the interest of The Gambia.’’
