Minister of Presidential Affairs Secretary General and Head of Civil Service Hon. Momodou Sabally on behalf of the Government of The Gambia, Monday 1 July 2013, received a cheque for US$52,000 from H.E. Samuel Chen, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The money is meant for the provision of equipment for Gambia Police Human Rights Unit.

Presenting the cheque, Ambassador Samuel Chen acknowledged the demand for setting up the Police Human Rights Unit is an improvement of the Gambia Police Force to execute their police task.

According to him, equipping the Police Human Rights Unit with a vehicle, computers and office furniture can help the police to advocate and promote human rights.

He expressed hope that the donation will enable The Gambia to enhance its security and stability status and that it will also promote the police exchange between the two countries.

For his part, Minister Sabally expressed his appreciation and commended the Government of Taiwan, ROC, for its continued support to The Gambia.

“Since President Jammeh began his heroic journey of putting this country on a high pedestal of rapid progress, peace and prosperity, we have had many allies and strategic partners,” he said.

“But I do not know of a better friend and ally of this country than the Republic of China on Taiwan. It is one thing to provide assistance based on the donor’s own interests and strategic objectives. But what is noble and commendable is to target assistance towards the set objectives and strategies of the receiver.”

According to him, ROC (Taiwan) has demonstrated enviable uniqueness in their bid to support President Jammeh’s development initiatives.

“The cheque we are receiving today is testimony to this assertion,” Hon. Sabally said. “We all know that security is of paramount importance in President Jammeh’s development programme. So supporting our security institutions is indeed worthy of commendation.”

He noted that the funds will better equip the Gambia Police Human Rights Unit with the necessary human rights protection training and will also help them to learn the ideal and right procedure to protect human rights, in order to maintain social order and security thereby providing a safer environment for all Gambians.

“We are grateful for yet another intervention that will go a long way in aiding President Jammeh’s development agenda,” he said.

He urged the Gambia Police Human Rights Unit to make proper use of the equipment.

On behalf of H.E. the President, his government and the people of The Gambia, I thank you profoundly and pray that Allah (S.W.T) continue to guide and protect your great country and her people,” he said.
