Six street beggars were Tuesday arraigned before senior Magistrate Lamin Mbye of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court, charged with common nuisance.

The accused persons are Momodou Saidy, Alieu Joof, Mamadi Touray, Salieu Jawo, Musa Mbye and Lamin Mboge.

It was alleged in the particulars of offence that on 25 July 2013, in the city of Banjul, the six accused persons were found unlawfully loitering and begging in the streets of Banjul and thereby committed an offence.

However, when the case was mentioned in court, the prosecuting officer told the court that the prosecution was applying to withdraw the matter from the court.

He said the prosecution had realised that if they had to prosecute the accused persons, it would be difficult to bring them to court.

According to the prosecutor, they were reliably informed that one of the accused person’s relatives took him to Basse and he promised that he would stop begging.

They were consequently discharged by the court.
