5 Arraigned on multiple criminal charges

Five accused persons were recently arraigned at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, charged with conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence.

The accused persons are Alpha Sey, Sheriffo Colley, Jariatou Colley, Muctarr Colley and Ali Jobe.

Meanwhile, Alpha Sey, Sheriffo Colley, Mutarr Colley and Ali Jobe were each granted court bail of D600,000 with a Gambian surety who must deposit a title deed with an ID card, while Jariatou Colley was granted court bail of D500,000 with a Gambian surety with an ID card.

According to the charge sheet on count one, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd accused persons, in January 2011, at Brusubi and diverse places, in the Kanifing Municipality, jointly conspired among themselves with intent to commit a felony, therein with defrauding the complainant of D525,000 and thereby committed an offence.

The charge sheet on count two read that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd accused persons, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, jointly obtained from one Momodou Jagne, on different dates, an amount of D525,000, under the pretext that they were going to offer prayers for his success and good health and to return the said amount to him which representation they knew to be false at the time of making such representation.

On count three, the 4th and 5th accused persons, in August 2010, at Senegambia and diverse places, in the Kanifing Municipality, jointly conspired among themselves to commit a felony, therein with defrauding the complainant of her money and thereby committed an offence.

Count four read that the 4th accused, in August 2010, at Kerr Sering and diverse places, in the Kanifing Municipality, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, obtained from one Gina Jackson D42,000 with the representation that he was going to use that money to purchase a cow for her charity in order to pave her way to success, which representation was false and he knew to be false.

The case was then adjourned till 4 November 2011.
