3 women arraigned for theft

Banna Jarju, Binta Kujabi and Merra Camara were 3rd November 2010 arraigned at the Kanifing Magistrates' Court before Magistrate Lamin George charged with stealing.

According to the charge sheet, on 18th October 2010 at Fajara in the Kanifing Municipality, the accused persons jointly stole 240 Euros from one Daeckalangt Isabelle.

Testifying for the prosecution, Babucarr Sawaneh said he knew the complainant, Daeckelangt Isabelle, and her husband, and that they were his guests from The Netherlands.

He said he also recognised the accused persons at the Fajara Guest House.

According to the witness, on 18th October 2010 he went out and when he returned, the complainant told him that her money was stolen from her bag.

He said the complainant at first told him that 120 Euros was stolen, and the following day she told him that another 120 Euros was also missing again.

"I then informed the owner of the guest house about the matter, and the landlord called the accused persons and asked them about the money, but they denied any knowledge of the missing money," he added.

He said the matter was later reported to the police station, adding that the 1st and 2nd accused persons were the cleaners, and 3rd accused was the receptionist.

Meanwhile, the accused persons who all denied the charge were each granted bail in the sum of D5,000 with a Gambian surety each.
