The second edition of the National Sports Award, organised by the Sports Journalists Association of the Gambia (SJAG) will be held at the Independence Stadium Friendship Hotel Garden later this beginning at 1800hrs.
The national sports award remains one of the biggest programmes in the yearly activities of SJAG. The annual event is meant to honour people and groups in sports for their achievements over a year. This, we believe will enhance greater participation and competition in our country, thus contributing to the attainment of excellence in sports.
We have this year chosen the theme: women; pillars in attaining excellence in sports, because we believe women must carry one half of the load of our drive to attaining excellence in sports as enshrined in our development blue print the vision 2020.
Sports disciplines that had national leagues in 2009 will be awarded. Living sports legends and sports journalists, paralympics, as well as individuals and cooperate bodies that have supported sports in 2009, will also be awarded.
An estimated 250 people are expected at the ceremony. This number includes the awardees, members of the SJAG, and others from the supports family. The award ceremony is extensively covered by all media houses in the country, and it prominently features in the annual bulletin of the International Sports Press (AIPS), of which we are affiliated. All our partners would therefore enjoy local and international recognition.
