Minister for Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment.

Minister Badjie was speaking during a two-day review and planning convergence with the theme: "Integrated Approach to Tackling Youth Unemployment through Graduate Volunteerism held at a local hotel in Kololi.

He emphasised the importance of initiatives like (NAYSGRAP) to bridge the gap between education and employment.

‘‘The programme represents hope for our young graduates and place them on a clear path toward nation-building,” minister Bah said. “By empowering our youth, we’re securing The Gambia’s future.”

Executive Director of National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), Abass Bah, urged graduates to uphold professionalism and foster positive relationships as they transition into the workforce.

“Your success is a reflection of the program’s mission,” he said.

“As ambassadors of NYSS, your contributions to your workplaces and communities will define your path to lasting success.”

Bah highlighted the programmes alignment with The Gambia’s Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (RF-NDP), specifically Outcome 6.3, which focuses on enhancing youth economic opportunities and fostering social development.

Samba Jallow, a representative of the UNDP, applauded the programme’s impact and reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to empowering youth through partnerships and initiatives.

“This program has changed lives, and its success is evident in the stories of graduates who have enriched institutions like the UNDP with their dedication and innovation,” Jallow said.

He called for strengthened partnerships to expand the programme and unlock the potential of Gambian youth, emphasising that youth empowerment is key to building an inclusive and thriving nation.

Meanwhile, one of the highlights of the event was the testimony of Sigga Kujabi, a graduate of the programme.

Kujabi recounted how NAYSGRAP gave her a lifeline after completing university without work experience.

“Through the program, I gained valuable skills, connected with professionals, and began my journey with the UNDP, which transformed my career prospects,” she pointed out.

Kujabi expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for championing transformative initiatives that provide critical support to young graduates.

Mbackeh Camara, a representative of the University of The Gambia (UTG), and Ousman Touray gave words of inspiration to NAYSGRAP graduates, encouraging them to make the best use of the knowledge and experience gained during their one-year internship programme.
