A regional dialogue to combat youth irregular migration in The Gambia ended recently in Janjanbureh, Central River Region.

The dialogue created a crucial platform to address various pressing issues related to youth irregular migration in the country.

The comprehensive discussions involved key topics such as the introduction and understanding of international migration laws, with a specific focus on readmission protocols.

Participants also delved into the challenges posed by the smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons, exploring strategies to combat these issues effectively.

A significant aspect of the dialogue centred on the impact of the free movement protocol and its implications on regional dynamics.

Stakeholders engaged in constructive conversations about the role of both government entities and partners in curbing migration, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to address the multifaceted aspects of this complex phenomenon.

The dialogue also shed light on the opportunities available for young people in The Gambia.

With the participation of forty youth leaders, migrant returnees, councillors, security personnel, persons with disabilities, and various other stakeholders in the migration process, the event became a diverse and inclusive platform for sharing perspectives and experiences.

During the discussions, the youth leaders expressed their concerns, highlighting the importance of government intervention in creating more employment opportunities.

The call for decentralizing development initiatives resonated strongly, as did the need for government support in areas such as entrepreneurship, skills training, and agriculture.

The youth emphasised the pivotal role of these measures in addressing migration challenges and fostering sustainable development within the region.

Appreciation was extended to the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Senegal and The Gambia for their support and the Government of The Gambia for creating an enabling environment for such dialogues.

This collaboration demonstrated a commitment to addressing migration issues comprehensively and working towards a future where the opportunities available for young people contribute to the overall growth and stability of the region.

The event served not only as a platform for dialogue but also as a catalyst for collective action and positive change in the realm of migration and its associated challenges.

Meanwhile, Team Cinem Arena concluded its nationwide caravan and sensitization campaign in Kanifing Municipality.

They discussed the risks and dangers associated with irregular migration as well as the socioeconomic alternatives and opportunities available in the country.

The regional dialogue to contend irregular migration in The Gambia stands as a beacon of hope and collaboration, uniting stakeholders in a shared commitment to address the complexities of migration and pave the way for a more secure and prosperous future for all.
