‎Sports Journalists Association of the Gambia women's sports reporters commission Sunday joined the world to commemorate International Women's Day celebration held at the Seaview Garden Hotel.

‎The event, under the theme: 'Accelerate Action to tackle Gender Inequality in the media'  brought together prominent women's football administration in The Gambia.

‎In her opening statement, chairperson of WSRC Ms Sarjo Baldeh, stated that they have not gathered here merely to celebrate or exchange pleasantries over International Women's Day.

"We are here because the whistle has blown, and we are currently playing in extra time for gender justice. Accelerate action to tackle Gender inequality in media coverage is not a polite suggestion; it is a demand for a tactical shift.”

“Women in sports have been treated like a curtain-raiser rather than the main match. Women sports writers see gap and we know the visibility of the currency of sponsorship because when the media is quiet, the sponsors walk away," Ms Sarjo explained.

“We also realise that when we hide these stories, we are not just failing the athletes; we are failing the future of Gambian sports,” she said.

Accelerating action means “we stop managing" the situation and start demanding the lead.

She urged journalists not dim their light for the sake of comfort, addling when you hold that microphone, you aren't just a reporter you are a witness to history and a gatekeeper of truth.

"Sports journalists are one to ensure that the sweat of our athletes is not washed away by the rain of indifference.”

“Your presence in the newsroom and football pitches is a revolutionary act, and your pen or mic. are the most powerful tools.”
