Sports Journalist Association of The Gambia (SJAG) on Friday defeated the Gambia Football Referees Association (GFRA) in the opening match of the Gambia Football Coaches Association (GFCA) following their 5-4 post-match penalty shootout win after the regulations time ended 2-all at the Late Ousman Saho Football Field at Old Yundum.

The tournament is sponsored by the President of The Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Kaba Bajo.
The Gambia Football Referees Association opened the scores through Alieu Secka in the first half before Pa Babou double their lead after the break.

SJAG pulled one back through The Point's Lamin Gibba before Sporty Nation Furumus Correa lelleved matters.
This pushed the match into post-match penalty shootouts which ended 5-4 in favour of SJAG.

The opening game was attended by the President of The Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Kabba Bajo, the president of the Gambia Football Coaches Association, Kebba Jesper Touray, SJAG President Musa Sise, Chairman of the organising committee Ansumana Jallow and his vice chairman Lamin Sanneh  among a host of other dignitaries.

On Saturday, the National Sports Council failed to show up for their game against the National Scorpions Fan Club, thus forcing the committee awarding three points plus 2 goals to the National Scorpions Fan Club.

Meanwhile, the semifinals match between SJAG and National Scorpions Fan Club will be played on Wednesday 30th August 2023 at the Late Ousman Saho Football Field at Old Yundum at 4:00pm.

Speaking at the opening match, GFF President Lamin Kaba Bajo, thanked The Gambia Football Coaches Association for the laudable initiative – which he said will serve as a source of unity among participating teams.

He said the tournament could not have come at a better time than now and therefore assured them of his fullest support.
According to Bajo, the tournament will now be part of GFF’s calendar of activities from next year with a much better organisation.
