Queen scorpions progress to next stage of AWCON qualifier

Gambia national women’s team; the Queen Scorpions yesterday, Monday drew 1-all with Sierra Leone in the second leg of the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau to progress to the next stage of the qualifiers to be held in February.

The Queen Scorpions thumped Sierra Leone 2-nil in the first leg encounter of the qualifiers played at Staduim in Monrovia in Liberia a week ago.

Ola Buwaro and Ruggy Joof were on target for The Gambia in the first leg encounter.

However, Spain based forward Fatoumatta Kanteh who was making her debut for The Gambia marked her appearance with a goal going into the break.

Sierra Leone leveled matter in the 52nd minute through Zainab Macauley but Aminata Mamie Bello’s sending off ensure the Sierra Leonean side end the game with ten women.

The draw earned The Gambia a 3-1 aggregate win over their fellow West African counterparts. 

The Gambia will now face Cameroun in the next stage of the qualifiers to be played in February.
