Ismaila Ceesay, president of the Gambia Secondary Schools Sports Association has stated that they are expecting over 200 schools to participate in this year’s School Sports Athletics Championship.

This is as a result of increasing numbers of participation of basic cycle schools in various regions.

Mr. Ceesay made the revalation during the association’s usual media briefing and updates on their preparations ahead of the inter-school championship.

The briefing was held at the Gambia Teachers Union Secretariat at Kanifing on Tuesday.

The expected increase, according to him, was as a result of organising regional congresses across the country some time last year.

He pointed out that it was the first time in the history of the Secondary Schools Sports Association to hold its congresses across the country for all schools and their representatives to converge and elect their own representatives.

“Before, regional coordinators were elected during our national congresses. We have decided to change the dynamic by making sure they elect their own representatives at regional level instead of the national delegate congress.”

He noted that the new elected representatives came into office with full force and much enthusiasm and vowed to ensure that participation of schools in this year’s championship would be increased as well as change the level of organising the championship.

“It is no longer going to be business as usual because they have ensured that there is much decorum, proper participation and organisation especially within the regions they are coordinating.”

He stated that they are also expecting over 5, 000 athletes, adding that all participating schools are expected to come out with at least 25-30 athletes that would partake in the championship.

“Certain schools might not be able to get 25 athletes but we believe they may come with 15 or 20 depending on whether their athletes might be able to participate in some of the events available.”
