Minister of Interior, Abdoulie Sanyang, has reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment by sponsoring National People’s Party (NPP) football tournament in Jarra West, Lower River Region.
The tournament is aimed at fostering peace, unity and talent development across communities.
The tournament brings together surrounding communities such as Toniataba, Sikunda, Jiffin, Fokoi Kunda, Soma and Pakalinding.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the tournament at the Toniataba village on Saturday, Minister Sanyang disclosed that football is no longer just a partime but an investment in the future.
Sanyang stated that the approach would strengthens bonds among communities, while providing young people with opportunities to shine on a larger stage.
As election approaches, Sanyang used the occasion to advise young people on the importance of peace and respect for the law.
“Election is something very critical.
Our advice is for the youth to continue respecting the law, respect everybody in society and understand that elections are simply about voting and respecting the views of the country,” Sanyang explained.
He revealed that the initiative is not only about sports but also instilling values of unity, discipline and civic responsibility.
“Bringing youth together to focus on energy on positive activities that build peace and harmony,” Sanyang said.
Chairman of the Village Development Committee (VDC), Nfally Ceesay, highlighted the importance of the event.
Ceesay noted that sports have become a powerful tool for unity and bring together youth, elders and women across villages.
“Sports unite people today and this tells us we are all one.
We can play, we can do everything together as one,” Ceesay said.
Ceesay added that that the tournament is not only about competition but also about fostering peace and harmony.
“ The tournament would definitely promotes peace within the community and among people.
Sports help to identify talented players who can be recognised by major teams and build their future careers,” Ceesay explained.
Ceesay expressed gratitude to Minister Abdoulie Sanyang for his generosity.
He urged other Gambians to emulate Minister Abdoulie Sanyang.
He encouraged Gambians, especially from these areas to do as Minister Sanyang did to promote peace through football and bring profit within youths.
Ceesay also encouraged young players to maintain discipline, adding that professionalism and respect in the field are keys to success.
The first prize winner for the NPP football tournament will receive D50,000
Runner-up will receive D25,000.
Participating villages will receive jerseys, footballs and D2,500 each.
Best goalkeeper, leading goal scorer and most disciplined player will all receive awards.
The NPP football tournament is expected to serve as a platform for nurturing future football stars.
