The AIPS Congress held in Lausanne brought together delegates from over 110 countries, reaffirming its status as the premier global gathering of sports journalists. The Congress was marked by key leadership decisions, governance reforms, and significant developments concerning Africa’s growing influence within the international sports media landscape.
In a competitive election, he defeated Executive Committee member Dr. Szusza of Hungary.
His re-election reflects the confidence of the global sports journalism community in his leadership, particularly during a period of transformation in media, technology, and sports governance.
AIPS Africa maintained a strong presence at the global level, with Abdoulaye Thiam, President of AIPS Africa, retaining his position within the Executive Committee while also serving as a Vice President.
This continued representation ensures that Africa’s voice remains active in shaping the future direction of global sports journalism.
One of the most significant developments of the Congress was the introduction of a reform motion led by AIPS Africa, with the support of the French Association in limiting the tenure of the AIPS President to three terms of four years each
The congress also witnessed the election of the first woman 1st Vice President in Kenyan Evelyn Watta.
This aligns AIPS with governance standards adopted by major international organizations such as IOC and FIFA.
The proposal reflects a commitment toInstitutional renewal, transparency and good governance practices
In another major development, Ethiopia emerged as a strong candidate to host the 89th AIPS Congress, following a compelling and well-received presentation during the Lausanne gathering.
The bid highlighted Ethiopia’sStrategic importance, rich cultural and historical heritage, capacity to host international events following in the footsteps of Banjul 2026 and Rabat in 2025.
There is strong indication that the global sports press may converge in Addis Ababa in the near future.
In line with Ethiopia’s strong showing, it is highly likely that AIPS Africa will align its calendar accordingly, with the 9th AIPS Africa Congress expected to be hosted in Addis Ababa.
This would further reinforce Africa’s growing visibility and leadership within the global sports journalism community.
The Congress was also attended by Omar Jarju, President of the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG), whose presence contributed to the strengthening of African participation and engagement at the global level.
The Lausanne Congress marked a significant moment for AIPS and its continental bodies.
The Congress reaffirmed that Africa is not only participating but increasingly shaping the direction of global sports journalism.
