Gambia strive to excel in 2023 AFCON

 The Gambia senior national team will strive to excel in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following their brilliant performance in their debut appearance in the continent’s bi-annual biggest football showpiece held in Cameroon in 2021.

The Scorpions snatched qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after finishing second-place in Group G of the qualifiers with 10 points in six qualifier matches.

The Scorpions will contend to shine in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following their eye-catching performance in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Cameroon.

The Gambia reached the quarter-finals of Africa Cup of Nations in their debut appearance in 2021 but slipped to Cameroon 2-0 in their last four clash.

Coach Tom Saintfiet and his charges will scuffle to outmuscle Senegal, Guinea Conakry and Cameroon in their group phase matches to advance to the round of sixteen of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, The Gambia lost to Burundi and Ivory Coast in their 2026 World Cup qualifier matches played last month in Dares Salam, Tanzania.

The Scorpions slipped to Burundi 3-2 in their opening qualifier match before losing to Ivory Coast 2-0 in their second qualifier match.

The Gambia will be hoping to play more international test matches to improve on weaknesses ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations set to commence in January 2024.
