Gambia shine in Senegambia derby fixture

The Gambia have shined in their Senegambia derby match against Senegal.

The Scorpions slipped to the Terranga Lions 3-1 in an international friendly match played at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio on Tuesday evening.

Despite surrendering victory to Senegal, The Gambia performed well during the match and created numerous goal scoring opportunities.

Budding Adama Bojang could have opened the scores for The Gambia mid-way into the first half from Yankuba Minteh's cross but his header went over the cross bar.

Captain Abdoulaye Seck gave Senegal the lead in the stoppage time of the first half from a stunning header.

The Gambia responded back quickly for an equaliser but to no avail thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of Senegal.

Two minutes after the restart, substitute Ibrahim Mbaye extended Senegal's lead.

The Gambia organised themselves and mounted presure on Senegal and crafted goal scoring opportunities.

Captain Omar Colley pulled back one goal for The Gambia in the 51st minute of the match from a brilliant header.

Substitute Lamine Camara scored the third goal for Senegal in the stoppage time of the match to earn the Terranga Lions a convincing victory over the Scorpions.

The international friendly match was part of The Gambia's preparations prior to the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The international friendly match was also part of Senegal's preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, The Gambia have failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco, after losing to Comoros Islands 2-1 in  their qualifier match.
