The Gambia Golf Association (GGA) on Friday held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Dandimayo Hotel.

Two people were nominated to be GGA Committee Members - Dodou Gassama and Omar Jadama. The members present voted and those who were against outnumbered those in favour, hence they both lost their bid to be elected to the GGA Committee.

One motion was presented for review of the GGA Constitution. However, the motion was found to be defective and was not therefore heard. To have done so would essentially mean abrogating the current GGA Constitution duly recognised by the National Sports Council, Gambia National Olympic Committee, The R&A and the International Golf Federation.

The President`s Activity Report and Treasurer`s Financial Report were duly adopted.

Ebrima Jawara, the president of GGA, said as a result of international and national protocols instituted to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus, activities in 2021 began on 16 May 2021, when the Fajara Club formally renamed the golf course to Sir Dawda Jawara – Fajara Club Golf Course, in honour of The Gambia’s former and first president. The club also unveiled a bust of the former president at the entrance of the club, he added.

On 31 July 2021 the reconstituted organising committee for the 2020 Gambia Open held its first meeting, he went on, saying members of the committee included representatives from the Gambia Golf Association (GGA), Fajara Club and the National Sports Council.

Mr. Jawara said that on 8th October 2021, Baidy Agne President of the Senegalese Golf Federation and himself (Ebrima Jawara President of the Gambia Golf Association) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the creation of the Senegambian Golf Cup, at a ceremony held in Dakar.

Both governing bodies decided to hold the maiden edition of the Senegambian Golf Cup in Banjul, from 26 to 27 November 2021.

The 2020 Gambia Open golf tournament organised by the GGA in partnership with Fajara Club was played at the Sir Dawda Jawara-Fajara Club Golf Course from 16 to 21 November 2021.

The tournament was initially scheduled for March 2020, but had to be postponed due to the lockdown protocols aimed at controlling the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The tournament was dedicated to the memory of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, GMRG, GCMG, FRCVS, first Chief Patron of the Gambia Golf Association, who died peacefully aged 95 at his home in Fajara, on Tuesday 27 August 2019.

The Gambia on 27 November 2021 was crowned champion of the maiden edition of the Senegambia Golf Cup played at the Sir Dawda Jawara- Fajara Golf Course.

He thanked his fellow Committee Members for giving their time and personal resources towards the running of GGA.

Alh. Abdoulie Bajang, desk officer for wrestling at the National Sports Council, said the truth was spoken from stakeholders during the AGM, noting that such is how AGM should be. Whatever that will hamper sport should be pointed out, while urging GGA Executive and golf stakeholders to work together for the development of the sport.
