Former Gambian midfielder, Ebrima Sohna, has expressed immense gratitude to former Scorpions coach Tom Sainfiet who resigned from his post on Tuesday following the country’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a letter sent to the Belgian coach, Shona said: “With immense gratitude and from the bottom of my heart, I want to express a very big thank you.”

The former hard=tacking midfielder added: “Working with you has been an extraordinary journey, and I consider you one of the most amazing human beings I have ever had the privilege to work with.”

According to him, “From the very first day and your very first invitation I ever got from you, you told me: ‘Ebrima I invited you for us to make history together and qualify The Gambia to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time ever.’ It is something I will never forget.

“While other coaches might have sought opportunities elsewhere because of the money or opportunities, you chose The Gambia out of love, guiding us to unprecedented success and you wholeheartedly took us to where we have never been before.”

He also said that Tom’s decision to take the Scorpions job shows the massive love he has for The Gambia.

Sohna observed that with all the obstacles, Tom sacrificed everything within his powers to write history (back to back AFCON appearances) for The Gambia “that will remain in our heart forever”.

“Your unwavering dedication and sacrifice to overcome obstacles and prioritise our country over personal gains set you apart. Thank you so much, gaffer, for the incredible moments we have shared,” the former Gambian player said.

The former Gambian international also wished Tom well in his future endeavors and the new chapter that awaits him.

Meanwhile, Tom Sainfiet, former Scorpions coach, in his resignation message, said: "Thank you Gambia! I love you forever! Five and a half years I had the honour to work with the best federation ever, a fantastic supportive President, great vice presidents, a top board, the best team manager in the world, a brilliant coaching, medical and support staff and most of all my heroes - the best players in the world! I love you all!  Thank you, I am going to miss you but in my heart you will be always close by! Good luck Scorpions! Proud of you all!”
