The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed retired Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama as its new Manager of Referees’ Development, a key role aimed at strengthening the quality and professionalism of officiating across the continent.

Gassama, one of Africa’s most decorated referees, brings a wealth of experience to the position. Over the course of his illustrious career, he officiated at three FIFA World Cups and multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, earning a reputation for consistency, integrity, and high-level performance.

CAF said Gassama’s appointment marks a significant step in its strategy to raise refereeing standards, improve training programmes, and support the next generation of African match officials.

His new role will involve overseeing referee education, talent development, and performance management across member associations.

Gassama’s transition from the pitch to a leadership role has been widely welcomed in African football circles, with many seeing it as a continuation of his long-standing contribution to the game.
