Today, albeit briefly and belatedly, we write a special tribute (not a biography) in honour of a special human being, nay a living legend, which is our own special way to show our great love and respect for such an unsung seminal figure as well as celebrate his exemplary, most fulfilling and well-invested life.
It is none other than the Honourable Lamin Kiti Jabang, whose cursus vitae can thus be summarized as follows:
A trained educator by profession, L. K. Jabang, as he is widely known, drifted into politics and subsequently, over the years, occupied important positions of Member of the House of Representatives (MP) for decades, of the cabinet rank of Minister of External Affairs (1977-1987), Minister of the Interior (1977-1994).
I, personally, was fortunate to have him as my overall head at the Ministry of External Affairs in late 70s to mid 90s.
His journey with the Ministry however, proved indisputably that he possessed the flexibility, the understanding, and the aptitude to rise to any challenge, especially if it would redound to nation-building, boost foreign relations and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of our beloved country, The Gambia.
Indeed, Minister Jabang was constantly learning and embracing those new issues that arose, giving a fresh perspective on complex international matters that needed resolution. A case in point was the Gulf conflict, namely the Iraq-Iran of which the Gambia was selected to head the Organization of the Islamic Conference’s mediation team in the person of the Gambia’s President Sir Dawda K. Jawara.
His keen interest and dedication to the assignment ensured that he quickly developed expertise in the area and represented The Gambia admirably well on the international stage.

Yes, he had risen to national and international prominence through his own educational journey, professional achievements, and unwavering dedication to public service.
His legacy is thus an inspiring testament to the power of vision, hard work, and patriotism.
A devoted member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Honourable Jabang played a pivotal role in advancing the party’s vision of unity, development, and prosperity.
Besides, his contributions to his party had been instrumental in shaping policies that prioritize national growth, regional stability, and international collaboration.
Of importance is that, as the Minister of External Affairs, his tenure has been characterized by:
- Strengthening Diplomatic Relations:
He was instrumental in expanding The Gambia’s diplomatic reach, forging new partnerships, and enhancing bilateral and multilateral relations with countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
- Advocating for Global Peace and Development:
His tenure saw The Gambia take a more active role in international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the Organization Of African Unity (OAU), the Organization of The Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), championing major issues such as conflict resolution and global peace, equitable development, human rights, climate change etc
- Promoting The Gambia’s Economic Interests:
Through his efforts, The Gambia attracted significant foreign investment, especially from the Arab World, contributing to national economic growth and development.
Diplomatic Excellence
Minister Jabang’s diplomacy was indeed marked by his ability to navigate complex international landscapes with grace and effectiveness.
His strategic engagement with world leaders and institutions bolstered our country’s reputation as a peace-loving and forward-thinking nation.

Honourable Jabang’s life has been a story of service, resilience, and achievement.
His legacy will forever be remembered for his unwavering commitment to advancing The Gambia's interests, empowering its citizens, and building bridges of cooperation with the global community.
As a seasoned diplomat, eminent leader and distinguished patriot, Honourable Jabang exemplifies the highest ideals of public service, leaving an indelible mark on our country's history and future.
Finally, Honourable Minister Jabang’s tenure in office will continue to be especially remembered for his engagement in international fora and his strong advocacy for the case for the development of friendly relations among nations; the maintenance of international peace and security; the achievement of international cooperation in economic, social, cultural and humanitarian fields; and the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms and not least of all the critical issue of sustainable development; such international achievements resulted in The Gambia being unanimously selected as the seat and headquarters of the African Union’s Human Rights Commission as well as of the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies.
Finally, it cannot be gainsaid that Honourable Minister Lamin Jabang is the most friendly, down to earth, amiable, sociable, companionable, decent, upright, well-dressed human being.
Suffice to say that he is a person’s person, a friend of all the world, one who embodies all that is best in us, nay the good example of a good person in God.
May the Almighty God continue to reward him with continued long life, continued good health and continued sound mind with continued grace and continued dignity.
