Commentary on Lent: Sharpening Your Spirit: The Power of Fasting, Prayer, and Meditation on Scripture (Part 3)

Mar 21, 2025, 11:46 AM | Article By: Pastor Augustine Erskine

Are you feeling spiritually drained, struggling to hear God’s voice, or lacking clarity in your walk with Him? Just as a dull ax makes work harder, a dull spirit makes our spiritual journey exhausting and ineffective. Ecclesiastes 10:10 (Expanded Bible) reminds us:

"A dull ax means harder work [If the ax is blunt and the edge is not sharp, then he must increase his efforts]. Being wise will make it easier [The advantage of wisdom is success]."

This verse paints a clear picture: a dull ax requires more effort to cut through wood, just as an unsharpened spirit struggles to connect with God. Fasting, combined with prayer and meditation on Scripture, acts as a sharpening tool, making our spiritual walk more effective and our connection with God stronger.

Fasting: The Act of Sharpening

Fasting is a deliberate act of self-denial that humbles the soul and increases spiritual sensitivity. Just as an ax must be ground against a sharpening stone to regain its edge, fasting grinds away the dullness of complacency, worldliness, and fleshly desires. Jesus Himself fasted for forty days (Matthew 4:2), demonstrating the power of spiritual discipline in overcoming temptation and receiving divine strength.

Prayer: The Handle That Gives Control

An ax without a firm handle is difficult to wield, no matter how sharp its blade is. In the same way, prayer gives us control and direction in our spiritual journey. It aligns our will with God’s, bringing clarity, peace, and divine intervention. Through prayer, we maintain our grip on God’s promises and purposes for our lives.

Meditation on Scripture: The Precision That Cuts Deep

A sharp ax does not just strike; it cuts with precision. Meditation on Scripture refines our thoughts and actions, allowing God’s Word to penetrate our hearts and guide our steps. Psalm 1:2-3 tells us that the one who delights in and meditates on God’s Word is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in its season. When we fill our minds with Scripture, we gain wisdom, discernment, and the ability to navigate life’s challenges with divine insight.

The Result: A Sharpened Spirit Ready to Receive

When fasting, prayer, and meditation on Scripture come together, they create a spiritually sharpened believer—one who can clearly hear God’s voice, walk in His will, and operate in His power. No longer struggling to break through spiritual barriers, they move with ease and effectiveness, just as a sharp ax cuts effortlessly through wood.

If you feel spiritually dull or disconnected from God, take action today. Set aside time to fast, pray, and meditate on His Word. Start with a day of fasting, commit to intentional prayer, and dive deep into Scripture. Ask God to renew your strength, sharpen your spirit, and position you to receive His direction.

A sharp ax gets the job done with ease—so does a sharpened spirit! Will you take the step to sharpen yours today?
