The time has come for a revolution in Gambian agriculture — a shift towards full mechanization, modern agricultural practices, and the empowerment of our farmers. Mechanized agriculture is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for sustainable development and national food security.
To achieve this, we must hire the most qualified and mechanically inclined individuals, those with modern agricultural knowledge and expertise. Without skilled personnel who understand both traditional farming and modern techniques, true progress will remain a dream.
Another crucial component of this transformation is the provision of agricultural insurance for our farmers. Farmers deserve protection against unpredictable risks such as droughts, floods, and pest invasions. Proper pre-farming planning and post-farming support are essential pillars to ensure that every farming season is not just a gamble but a carefully strategized endeavor.
As we approach the 2025 rainy season, I call on the Ministry of Agriculture to urgently address farmers’ needs and concerns. Timely preparation is key. One inspiring example we must highlight is the remarkable achievement of Mr. Abubacarr Bachilly of Sahel Agribusiness, who introduced a mobile solar water pumping system to support farmers. Innovations like this can be game-changers, ensuring water accessibility and improved yields.
It’s time for our farmers to be happy and reap the great rewards of their hard work. Farming should not be a struggle but a profitable and dignified career.
I also extend an invitation to both national and international investors to invest in Gambian agriculture. Our country is blessed with immense potential in crop production, fruit farming, animal husbandry, fishery, and many other forms of agriculture. With the right investment and commitment, The Gambia can become a powerhouse of agricultural prosperity once again.
As nation builders, it is our duty to use farming as a tool for progress, a source of empowerment, and a political distraction from negativity. We must stop complaining and start building.
The Gambia is naturally blessed with abundant fresh water and fertile land. If we meaningfully engage our youth in agriculture, the difference could be transformative. Agriculture once formed the backbone of our economy. Today, The Gambia relies heavily on taxes. However, by revitalizing agriculture, we can return to an era where farming was the foundation of our economic success.
Let’s make agriculture our pride once again. Let’s invest, innovate, and inspire.
