The event was in line with the institution’s culture and tradition of welcoming newly admitted students. Also, these students were sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education which takes them through certificates to degree level throughout their four-year stint.
Speaking at the orientation held at its campus, Alieu Badara Saine, USET Registrar, described the day as a remarkable event in the history of transformation of the institution.
He called on the newly enrolled students to take their education with utmost responsibilities and dedication.
Saine informed them that the University takes zero tolerance for any form of harassment, particularly sexual harassment, noting that their main agenda is to push the relevance of higher and technical education for the country.
Ebrima Cham, chairman of the USET Governing Council, said he looked forward to having all students succeed at the end of their four-year studies in their various areas.
The country, he observed, is in short of engineers which makes it a need to have expertise to work in the different sectors.
He reminded the newly enrolled students that The Gambia government is making a huge investment in the area of education and thanked President Adama Barrow for his foresight and prioritising the teaching of the Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) in The Gambia.
“Currently as we speak, the construction of the new USET campus at Brikama is in progress and we hope that in months’ time, the construction would be ready for students to go into the new campus.”
He equally applauded the Minister of Higher Education, Professor Pierre Gomez for his support towards the development of USET in the country.
“As students of USET your primary goal is to learn hard in your different disciplines you would be graduating in. It would be an opportunity for you the students to meet new friends and learn new skills.”
He thanked the management and staff of USET for the hard work in upgrading the standards of the University as they want it to be a school of excellence in Africa.
