World marks Int’l Day of PLWDs
A sign language interpreter, Lamin Sonko has called for the inclusion of People Living With Disability as the world celebrates International Day of Person’s Living With Disabilities.

December 3rd annually is commemorated as International Day of Person’s Living With Disabilities; a day set aside to renew call on governments, civil society organisations and key partners in improving the plight of PLWD.

The theme for this year’s event is -‘United in action' to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with, and by persons with disabilities.’

“They must work together to create an inclusive and accessible environment that values and empowers persons with disabilities. This includes implementing policies and programs that promote access to education, employment, healthcare, and social services, as well as protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life.”

“As we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, it is essential that we recognise the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their abilities. Persons with disabilities are not just recipients of charity or aid, but rather, they are human beings with the same rights and aspirations as anyone else. They have the right to equality, justice, and the same opportunities as others to reach their full potential.” he added.

Sonko reiterated that it is important to recognise that persons with disabilities are not a homogeneous group and that they have diverse needs and experiences.

“Key authorities must take into account the specific challenges and barriers faced by different groups of persons with disabilities, such as women, children, and older persons, and work to address these challenges in a comprehensive and inclusive manner.”

On the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, he said, it is not only a moral imperative, but also essential in order to achieve sustainable development and social justice.

“Key authorities must prioritise the rights of persons with disabilities in all aspects of their work and work towards creating a society that values and includes all individuals, regardless of their abilities.”

Sonko reminded that this year’s theme is a call to action and for all to work together to make the world better and fairer for people with disability.
