Banjul, The Gambia, 16 June 2025¾ “Today we remember the children of Soweto who, 48 years ago, marched for their right to quality education and dignity. Their bravery shaped a movement. Their voice still echoes in every child calling to be seen, heard, and protected.
“This year’s theme, ‘Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010’, reminds us that promises to children must be backed by action — and by budgets.
“Since 2010, there has been progress. Here in The Gambia, we’ve seen strides in child health, access to education, and significant legal reforms to protect children from violence and harmful social norms. UNICEF is proud to have walked this journey for 60 years — hand in hand with the Government of The Gambia, civil society, communities, and most importantly children.
“Yet, the Gambia Bureau of Statistic’s recent publication states that 9 out of 10 children in The Gambia still face multiple deprivations. Across The Gambia, too many children remain without access to clean water, nutritious food, safe learning spaces, or protection.
“Budgets are often stretched, but children must not be overlooked. The Committee on the Rights of the Child recently has called for stronger public finance for children — and we echo that call.
“Children and adolescents are close to 54% of The Gambia’s population today, this is not a burden — it’s our greatest opportunity.
“We therefore urge all leaders and partners in The Gambia to:
- Increase budget allocations for child health, education, nutrition, protection, and social welfare.
- Adopt child-sensitive budgeting laws and tools, with clear indicators and tracking.
- Ensure good governance and transparency, so every dalasi spent makes a difference.
- Create meaningful spaces for children to share their views — not as a formality, but to realise their right to participate.
- Prioritise the most vulnerable, including girls, children with disabilities, children in institutional care like Majalis and children on the street or living in poverty.
“When we plan and budget with children in mind, we don't just improve services — we transform lives. Every child reached is a life uplifted. Every investment in children is an investment in peace, resilience, and prosperity.
“The national motto of The Gambia "Progress - Peace - Prosperity" can be achieved fully if we invest on children and their wellbeing.
“UNICEF and the entire UN family remain committed to standing with The Gambia — to build a country where every child’s every right is protected, and they are empowered, and able to dream boldly.
“Let us keep building a better world by investing in children today and for days to come. We count on your support and leadership.”
