Youths in the Central River Region north settlement of Tankong Kunda recently embarked on a mass tree planting exercise, a community initiative that witnessed the planting of over 50 mangos and oranges within the village.

The exercise was part of efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change while conserving the country’s fast depleting forest cover.

Speaking at the event, Abdoulie Tiyana, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Tankong Kunda Youth Development Association, emphasised the importance of the exercise, saying the exercise was aimed at enhancing food security, to restore and protect our natural environment.

He thanked the youth in the Diaspora for their valuable financial support towards the tree planting exercise.

He thus appealed to government especially the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources to always inform on issues relating to mitigating climate change and preserving the environment.

Mankamang Komma, a youth leader of the village, explained the initiative would encourage others while promoting agricultural innovation and improving quality of life for all.

“It also promotes future economic opportunities for the youths and the families. The survival of mankind depends on the environment and if it's not preserved, it can lead to low agricultural productivity, which will greatly affect the lives of the people.”
