This contract, which takes effect on December 8th 2022 would now allow the Gambian promoter to popularise the work and interest of the Swedish music label in the country.
It will also avail the label to scout, hone and harness the potentials of upcoming Gambian artistes as well as promote Gambian cultures on the international stage.
At a recent signing ceremony held at Heritage Restaurant Senegambia, Fabakary Ceesay, Gambian journalist, who is also media officer for the Swedish label in The Gambia, explained that Freestyler Records Label based in Gothenburg, Sweden was established in 1995 by a Gambian-Swedish.
“Since its establishment in 1995, the label has been focusing on musical entertainment namely Reggae, Afrobeat, ‘Ndagga’, hip-hop and other sounds and artistes mainly from East Africa and Swedish artistes as well.”
The label, added, now wants to focus on talents from the Smiling Coast by expanding their activities and making their presence felt in The Gambia to promote artistes as well as its cultures in Europe especially in Scandinavia.
“… earlier on, the company has been signing artists from Tanzania and Nigeria but now wants to focus on The Gambia. The company is also active in organizing shows and big events in Sweden and other parts of Europe.”
For his part, Stickybee, Gambian promoter, hailed the move as another milestone in the development of the country’s music landscape.
He thanked the Swedish Label for the trust and confidence reposed in him, further expressing his resolve to work the group in a bid to promote sounds and artists from The Gambia.
“The Freestyler Records is not here for Stickybee alone but Gambian music in general though, I will be their weapon and backbone in the country. So, I welcome this development and I’m ready to work with them. Many people have approached me in the past in order to work with them, but I didn’t give them the go ahead because I didn’t see a way forward as far as their music is concern.”
He revealed that when he went through the concept of Freestyler Records, he was convinced to work with them as they want to promote Gambian music and cultures to another height.
He made reference to the fact that the Swedish label has supported artistes in the country, whom he worked with to put up successful events as well as shows on the international stage. “I think this is a major move and something that we’ve prayed for.”
