Each of the packages includes 25kg bags of rice, 4kg of sugar and four bottles of water.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Girish Patel, assistant manager of Steel Gambia Ltd., said they provide the gesture as part of their contribution in assisting needy Gambians during the trying moments of the pandemic.
“We are doing this with the hope to see all Gambians happy and in good health, which is part of our motto of operation,” he said.
Essa Faal, a member of the Gambia National Fundraisers for Covid-19 thanked Mr. Mukesh Thakwani, general manager of Steel Gambia Ltd. for the gesture, saying it will go a long way in helping the beneficiaries.
“We are doing this for no other purpose than to respond to the call of the president and the government for all Gambians to come together and help one another in this great time of need.”
He added: “If we are to survive this disease, we will have to comply with the very simple instructions of the government to observe social distancing and to say at home for non-essential work.”
Mr. Faal said the government cannot do it all alone in spite of their best efforts and endeavours, adding that it is the responsibility of businesses and citizens to help one another in this great time of need.
According to him, so far they have provided much-needy food assistance to 1,423 families, noting that with the generous donation, they will hit the milestone and target of approximately 2000 families.
“Our fundraising has been quite successful and we hope that from what we already received we will be able to help another 2000 Gambian families,” he said.
