The Qatari organisation made similar gesture last year during which it was able to reach several communities in the country.
The donated items, which include several 25kg bags of rice and sugar and 10-litres of cooking oil, were presented to communities of Mandinary, Kombo Kerewan, Brufut, and Latriya villages in the WCR and Bakalari in Lower Niumi, North Bank Region.
Presenting the items on behalf of the Qatari ambassador to The Gambia, Bambo M.L. Sillah, media researcher for Qatar Embassy, said the gesture was aimed at helping needy Muslims in the holy month of Ramadan.
“As we are in the month of Ramadan and it is a culture in the Islamic State of Qatar to support needy Muslims; therefore, this gesture is part of that generosity. Qatar Funds for Development started this gesture last year and the organisation was able to reach several communities.” he said.
He, however, noted that the Qatar Fund for Development this year is supporting about 300 needy families.
Sillah urged beneficiaries to utilise the foodstuffs judiciously and prayed to Allah to reward the donors.
Further on Qatari contribution to Gambia’s development endeavors, Sillah reminded that the government of the State of Qatar and its organisations have been supporting the country in various areas such as health, education, disaster response among others.
Kitabu Sanneh, beneficiary from Mandinary, while describing the gesture as timely, said the items would go a long way in helping him and his family in the holy month of Ramadan.
“Even today I was thinking about how to get sugar. If this family sees these items all of them would be happy,” he said.
He thus commended the benefactor for what he called their timely humanitarian gesture to the needy.
Maimuna Camara of Kombo Kerewan lauded the donors for the gesture. The gesture, she added, would help in their daily survival, especially in this holy month of Ramadan.”
She thus thanked Qatar Fund for Development for providing food items for her. She prayed that Almighty Allah bestow his blessings on the Qatari for the support.
