Mr. Hydara who has not made any sales from the farm since its construction in 2016 narrated that the project was initially funded by IFAD and executed by the Livestock and Horticultural Development Project (LHDP) while his contribution was the land measuring 50 x 50 and the construction of the cottage.
According to him, the aqua-poultry located in Tanbunyul near abattoir in Barra is meant to encourage backyard farming system and motivate local women around the riverine or ‘bolong’ area to know the importance of the natural endowment around them.
Project funders targeted five areas which includes Bwiam, Mayamba, Kanuma Barra and others with a membership of over twenty people(11 women and 13 young boys whom are back-way returnees).
At Aba’s Aqua-Poultry Farm, the concentration is on chicken, shrimps/prawns, tilapia, mullet farming, explained Hydara.
He added that there is possibility of oyster farming, using string method instead of mangroves.
“The cottage of the aqua-poultry was brought down by the recent windstorm and I hereby solicit for assistance either in kind or financially from everyone who can so that we can reconstruct the cottage of the poultry. We need strong pillars for the cottage. The previous pillars got weakened overtime because of the saline, wetness among other things,” he also said.
Mr Hydara, further called for assistance so that the initiative would not die down saying it is a good way of ensuring food safety as well as topromoting backyard farming in riverine communities.
