In a presser signed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the network said it learnt with great concern that the Senegalese Presidential Election, initially scheduled for the 25th February, 2024 has been postponed to December 2024, which brought some disturbances in the country.
In light of the aforementioned, the network called for calm amongst the citizenry, while also encouraging all stakeholders to immediately begin a national dialogue that would be geared towards resolving all acute political differences.
“The interests and well-being of the Senegalese citizens should always be the peak of the pyramid of priorities before any authority or stakeholder– be it a political, executive, judiciary, legislature or security apparatus.” it said.
Furthermore, the Peace Network, after diagnosing all causes, particularly those stemming from rising political tensions in Senegal, is compelled by those very circumstances to call on the Senegalese state to encourage dialogue with all stakeholders without any further delay.
The network stated that it firmly believes that Senegal is a sub-regional force to reckon with, adding that its contribution and role in the promotion and maintenance of peace and security in West Africa and around the world, is not a secret.
“Therefore, we call for peace and stability in Senegal which are the best safeguards for growth and development. An unstable Senegal will not only affect the country but West Africa and the globe at large.” it stated.
The network also called on religious, cultural, and political leaders in Senegal, Gambia, and the sub-region at large, to combine their efforts in helping Senegal remain as peaceful and tranquil as possible, to successfully carry out the next presidential elections in the spirit of democracy.
