The National Youth Parliament (NYP) has urged the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General's Chambers to join forces with the National Assembly in devising clear-cut criteria and benchmarks for the exercise of presidential pardons.

The calls for statutory clarity on presidential exonerations comes amid rise on public scrutiny of executive powers.

In a press release, the NYP argues that passing such legislation is vital to guaranteeing transparency, accountability and the judicious use of executive powers.

To that end, the NYP underscored that concerted endeavour among key legal entities is a necessity to institute clear-cut procedures and strong guidelines surrounding presidential pardons.

"The National Youth Parliament calls on the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General's Chambers to collaborate with the National Assembly in legislating clear and concise criteria guiding the exercise of presidential pardons.” it states.

On the importance of this legislative initiative, the youth parliament underlined that a well-defined framework would contribute to fostering transparency and accountability in the pardon-granting process.

It also believes that such legislation would play a pivotal role in ensuring that the executive branch exercises its powers diligently and in the best interest of justice.
