The Project 2 of the Programme to Strengthen Resilience to Food and Nutrition Insecurity in the Sahel (P2-P2RS) recently planted over 500 assorted seedlings at a mega tree planting exercise held at Tankong Kunda forest, Sami District, Central River Region north.

Some of the assorted seedlings planted include Karpos Ilnasious, Kayers Senegalese, Gmaliners, Kodil Africaner and Kericapor.

In an exclusive interview with The Point, Sulayman M.S. Gagne, head of Information and Data Management Unit and a focal point, Department of Forestry gave a brief account of the project, saying the project was aimed at combating climate change, land degradation and deforestation.

The project, he added, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Agriculture through the Department of Forestry.

He called on the people of Tankong Kunda to make the best use of the project, as it is the only community in CRR to benefit from such transformative project.

He also spoke about the Department of Forestry continuous commitment toward mitigating climate change, land degradation and deforestation.

Jalamang Darboe, Regional Forestry Officer in CRR, equally echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging that the community of Tankong Kunda is known for their sound and active forestry management.

“In most of the community forests in The Gambia, one hardly find Kericapor, but Tankong Kunda forest is an exception, as their forest is well preserved and protected.” he added.

Kebba Danso, a member of the Village Forest Committee, hailed the project, assuring that the people of his community will continue to prioritise environmental protection and preservation.
