One-year-old Mena Gaye, born on 18 June 2024, is fighting for her life after being diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition. She is currently receiving treatment at the In-Patient Facility (IPF) of Farafenni General Hospital, where doctors have described her condition as critical and in urgent need of intervention.

Her parents, Sagay Matty Gaye and Mai Sallah, from Ngayen Sanjal Village in Sabach Sanjal District, North Bank East, are humbly appealing for immediate support from government institutions, NGOs, charitable organisations, and individuals to help save their daughter’s life.

A medical report shared with The Point confirms that Mena, the youngest of five siblings, is undergoing inpatient care for severe acute malnutrition. The report highlights that her condition reflects a deeper crisis of chronic food insecurity within the household.

The Gaye family lives in extreme poverty, often struggling to meet basic food and healthcare needs. The father has no stable source of income, while the mother bears the burden of childcare alongside small-scale farming and domestic work. Despite her efforts, the family frequently goes without nutritious meals and cannot afford essential medical treatment.

Doctors have noted that Mena’s fragile condition underscores the devastating impact of poverty, hunger, and illness on vulnerable families. Her mother remains by her side at the hospital, distressed and helpless, as her child’s frail body fights to survive.

The medical report further emphasises that the Gaye family’s struggle is not only about feeding their children, but about ensuring their survival amid extreme hardship.

Mena’s case highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, including medical treatment, nutritional support, and long-term interventions in education and healthcare for her siblings. Without timely help, the family’s daily struggle risks deepening into a cycle of despair.
