Nasir Ahmadiyya Muslim UB&SSS holds graduation

Nasir Ahmadiyya Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School in the Upper River Region (URR) recently held its annual graduation and prize giving ceremony for the 23-2024 academic year. 

The ceremony held at the school hall, was graced by students, parents, guardians and a cross section of the community.

In his presentation, Mr. Karamo Touray, principal of the school, commended the graduates for their tireless effort in achieving such an academic excellence, urging them to continue to uphold the integrity and dignity of the school.

He also spoke about the importance and use of social media, saying "Through social media, students can participate in discussions, share resources, and gain diverse perspectives. This connectivity enhances their critical thinking and broadens their understanding of different cultures and viewpoints. Accordingly, social media can serve as a platform for students to showcase their talents, creativity, and achievements, building their confidence and preparing them for the digital age."

Demba Kandeh, a Gambian journalist, in his presentation congratulated the graduates for their outstanding performance during their tough academic journey.

His presentation mainly focused on the misuse of technology (social media) that has negative effect in the society more especially in The Gambia. While underscoring the importance of social media, he equally brought to the fore the many issues making social media dangerous.

He talked about cyber bullying, hate speech, misinformation, misrepresentation and intrusion into privacy on social media.

To that end, he said everyone tends to be a journalist as long as one is using smart phone, urging people to avoid harassment of people's personalities on social media.

Kandeh also advised the public to always think, check, cross-check and fact check the information or stories before it is published.

Mahmoud Y. Barry of Grade 12B, one of the best students of the school in an interviewed with Nasir Press Club, said it was not an easy task to top the Art Department.

"It is all about dedication, focus and hardwork. Regularly, I read from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m each day, and it has become part of me. Reading is the only solution to achieve academic excellence as an Arts student. He advised students should take their work seriously and attend classes regularly."

Mr. Dot, a member of the Graduation Committee, also noted that the graduation is one of the best so far organised in the school.

"We corrected most of our mistakes we made last year and we are improving gradually as a school. I want to congratulate all the graduates, and I wish them better opportunities ahead, and my appreciation goes to the parents and guests for their support."

Awards were presented to deserving students for academic excellence. The School Drama Club educated the youth about danger of going "Back way", while Fatoumata Krubally read an educative poem.

The Sarahule Cultural Dancing group headed by Mariana Konate also put up a spectacular performance.
