The Ministry of Higher Education, Research Science, and Technology (MOHERST), in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MOBSE), ICESCO, and Avantis Education-UK, launched an innovative Virtual Reality (VR) Pilot Project aimed at enhancing learning experiences for students and teachers.

The Virtual Reality (VR) Pilot Programme which is designed to empower students and educators with the essential skills and tools needed to excel in the digital age is being funded by Islamic World Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and Avantist Education- UK.

The launch of the project coincided with the opening of a three-day masterclass workshop aimed at promoting the use of educational technology to enhance teaching effectiveness and improve the quality of education.

During his launch at the University of Education of The Gambia (UEG), Pierre Gomez, the Minister for MOHERST, proclaimed that this initiative represents a transformative milestone in the nation's advancement toward a contemporary, technology-enhanced education system as it aims to equip both students and educators with the essential tools and skills needed to excel in the digital age.

“Education serves as the cornerstone of national development, and in our rapidly changing world, the incorporation of innovative digital solutions is not just an option—it is a necessity,” he said.

The VR Pilot Project which is developed in partnership with Avantis Education UK, he said, signifies a pivotal advancement in transforming the nation’s educational landscape by providing students with immersive experiences in interactive, real-world simulations that foster deeper understanding and critical thinking skills.

Gomez praised Avantis Education UK for their exceptional expertise and innovative VR solutions, which have significantly enhanced the project, providing both educators and students with access to world-class technology.

He expressed gratitude to MoBSE for its collaborative efforts in developing policies that enhance digital learning and teacher training, and he also thanked UEG for hosting this pivotal workshop.

He reaffirmed government commitment to ensuring that technology is not just an accessory but an integral part of the country's education system.

He implored participants to fully immerse themselves in, explore, and embrace these emerging technologies, as they are pivotal in molding the next generation of Gambian leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers.

Haddy Jatou Sey, the former Minister for MOBSE and now the education director for ICESCO, stated that the organisation is dedicated to revolutionising the educational systems of all its member states.

She revealed that a pilot project is currently underway in The Gambia, Pakistan, Oman, and the Kingdom of Morocco.

"This project in The Gambia aims to support the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MOHERST) and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MOBSE) by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology to advance digitalization within the educational system," she stated.

Waqas Afridi, an education expert with ICESCO, reported that the project is currently in its pilot phase. He emphasised that if successful, organisations will commit to continuing and expanding the initiative to benefit even more individuals.

Meanwhile, David Mann, Senior Vice President of Avantis Education UK, expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with The Gambia on the pilot project, adding: “We are eager to work alongside you to explore the best ways we can contribute to transforming technology in the country.”
