The Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) centre is a component of the Institute of Technical Training (ITT) under the Gambia University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET).
The multi-purpose skill centre, purportedly built at the tune of 9 million dalasis, seeks to boost TVET education and provide relevant skills in fundamental human endeavours. Programmes currently being offered include auto mechanic, carpentry, construction, electrical installation and welding & fabrication.
Professor Gomez, speaking during the ceremony, re-echoed the relevance of skill training, saying: “We have a structural problem and we require a system of containment, a system where the money will stay because we will have Gambians who will work and be paid; therefore, the money stays in the country, which will eventually boost the economy and bring development.”
He hinted at self-employment and entrepreneurship as some of the driving forces behind government’s policy to promote TVET education in the country.
Similarly, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) donated construction and carpentry equipment as well as tools to the training centre during the occasion. On behalf of the government, Minister Gomez also extended his appreciation to TIKA for the gesture.
The occasion was graced by other higher education officials, staff of the University of Applied Science and Technology and representatives of TIKA, amongst others.
