The Gambia joins the global community to celebrate International Human Rights Day, a moment to reflect on the fundamental rights and freedoms that all individuals are entitled to.
This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future. Right Now,” underscores the urgency of taking collective action today to protect and promote human rights for all, shaping a more just, equitable, and sustainable future.
In The Gambia, the protection and promotion of human rights remains central to prevention of harm, ensuring peace, dignity, and equality for all and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The United Nations in The Gambia, in partnership with the Government of The Gambia and all stakeholders, continues to support efforts aimed at advancing human rights across the country.
Our collective work is focused on strengthening legal frameworks, promoting social justice, and ensuring the full participation of all citizens in the decisions that affect their lives.
On International Human Rights Day, we reflect on the progress made and celebrate our achievements and milestones.
We are reminded that it is only in unity and collective action that we can fully realize the rights and dignity of all individuals.
Human Rights Day also presents a critical opportunity for us to acknowledge the challenges and gaps that remain.
Challenges that include rights holders, particularly vulnerable groups such as women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons, increasingly faced with crises such as inequality, stigma and discrimination, climate change, and human rights violations.
We must continue to advocate for the rights of all people, especially the most vulnerable, to ensure that their voices are heard and respected and that no one is left behind in the development agenda.
As we commemorate this important day, let us all reaffirm our commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights.
Together, we can continue to build a Gambia where human rights are universally upheld and where all individuals realise and enjoy their rights in full.
The United Nations in The Gambia commends the Government of The Gambia for the great progress made in the protection, promotion and stewardship of Human Rights in the country and reaffirms its commitment to supporting the country in continuing on this road towards sustainable development.
On this International Human Rights Day, let us stand united in recognizing that our rights are our future, and the time to act is now.
