Lately, over 4, 000 were confirmed, which was later updated to 5, 000 as identification and registration continued across The Gambia.
“A total of 6,654 people were internally displaced across the affected communities,” the disaster agency indicated.
The population of this group includes the 52.4% of women and girls who need specific support on protection as they face exacerbated vulnerability and may be forced to resort to negative coping strategies, it said.
The two Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps in Banjul have closed. Some people went back to their homes and some are being housed at the Friendship Hostel in Bakau, the agency further said.
Currently, some of the displaced people are being hosted by relatives and friends whilst others are being lodged at public places such as schools.
Nevertheless, the NDMA executive director, Sana Dahaba called on journalists to verify information concerning the floods first before publication. This remark came on the heels of varying figures concerning the number of people the floods have rendered victims.
“Fighting misinformation, that one I leave it with the journalists. I think every journalist before you publish information, it should be verified,” he said.
