The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has been selected as one of the 50 finalist cities in the prestigious Bloomberg Global Mayors Challenge, securing $50,000 in funding to pilot an innovative project that addresses two pressing issues: waste management and youth unemployment.

The pilot initiative was officially launched on Thursday, 25th September, in Tallinding South Ward, targeting households in areas inaccessible to garbage trucks. As part of the pilot, thirty households in Tallinding South received new dustbins and training on waste sorting at home.

The initiative introduces a new system where tricycles operated by local youth and migrant returnees collect waste directly from households.

The collected waste will be sold to recycling companies, transforming trash into a valuable resource while promoting a circular economy. This approach not only addresses the growing problem of illegal dumping and burning of waste but also creates new income opportunities for young people in the municipality.

Officials describe the three-week pilot as a starting point with the potential for expansion. If successful, KMC could move from being among the 50 finalists to one of the 25 winning cities, unlocking additional funding to scale up the project across the municipality.

By integrating innovative waste management practices with youth employment, the initiative reflects KMC’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive future for its residents.
