In a move designed to enhance regional cooperation in peace-building and conflict prevention, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) launched its second National Alumni Chapter in The Gambia on July 10, 2025.

The move follows the successful establishment of the first chapter in Sierra Leone in 2024, which represents a strategic effort at building a vibrant alumni network that strengthens peace and security across West Africa.

Held in Banjul, the inauguration brought together nearly 40 alumni, some of whom have benefitted from KAIPTC training as far back as 2004. These individuals represent a wide range of expertise in election observation and management, disaster preparedness, conflict prevention, and humanitarian assistance.

Additionally, the centre provides globally recognised capacity for all actors on African peace and security through training, education, research, and policy dialogues to foster peace and stability in Africa.

At the ceremony, David Akrong, Air Commodore who is acting Commandant of KAIPTC, described the launch as more than a reunion.

He described it as symbolic and strategic importance as a renewed pledge to the Centre’s goals and ideals.

“Today, is more than a gathering of friends and colleagues, it’s a celebration of our shared purpose and an opportunity to re-engage with the Centre that has shaped many of our professional journeys. Our alumni are not just former students; they are lifelong ambassadors of our mission.” he said.

Air Commodore Akrong commended the alumni for their dedication and congratulated the newly elected executive committee, urging them to build a strong and collaborative chapter.

He personally administered the Oath of Office to the new executive team, further encouraging them to remain actively involved in advancing the Centre’s vision and promoting peace, good governance, and security across the region.

Meanwhile, the establishment of the Gambian chapter is a vital part of KAIPTC’s broader strategy to create an interconnected, continent-wide alumni network that fosters professional growth and regional synergy.

Operating under the theme “Unity for Peace and Security: Strengthening the Alumni Network for Regional Impact,” the new chapter aims to provide a platform for continued engagement among KAIPTC graduates in The Gambia and beyond.

It also seeks to connect professionals from various sectors including government, civil society, international organisations, and the private sector to work together on peace building initiatives.

The chapter’s core goals include strengthening lifelong relationships between KAIPTC and its alumni, offering opportunities for continuous learning and mentorship, promoting knowledge sharing, and encouraging active alumni contributions to the Centre’s long-term growth and impact.

As part of the launch, elections were held to select the chapter’s leadership. The newly elected executive members are - Marian Jabang, President, Bubacarr Sambou, Vice President, Mariama Barry - Secretary General, Juju Jallow - Public Relations Officer, and Lamin Jallow - Vice Public Relations Officer.

Each of the leaders expressed appreciation for the opportunity availed to them to serve, highlighting the transformative impact of KAIPTC training on their careers.

From advancing gender advocacy and improving national election monitoring to strengthening responses to terrorism and violence, the alumni credited their time at the Centre as foundational to their professional development.

In her acceptance remarks, newly elected President Marian Jabang promised to ensure constant engagement between the alumni and KAIPTC. “This platform will amplify the voices of alumni and keep us connected to the work and vision of the Centre,” she said.
