The program is multi-regional and will be centered in North Bank and Lower River regions. It will be implemented by IFRC to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to migrants around migratory regions both on land and sea.
Alasan Senghore, Secretary General for The Gambia Red Cross Society said that everyone should come together and identify the drivers of migration in order to be able to tackle it.
“We should identify the issues forcing people to embark on the dangerous journeys,” he said.
Elena Cripi, a member of the Italian Red Cross Delegation to The Gambia emphasised that migration is still a big test around the world and comes with challenges.
“Migrants face multiple challenges on their journeys. They face violence, conflict, political related issues, climate change issues, among others. Therefore, we are glad to support such initiative to help mitigate these problems in The Gambia,” she said.
Assan Tangara, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior said people on the move should be safeguarded as they are on the journey.
Jato Sillah, President of GRCS said they remain the key player in providing humanitarian support to the public and people on the move around the world.
“Red Cross is here to serve every human being as they deserve and this program will further strengthen that,” he declared.
