With funding from the European Union, a total of 20 female officers from The Gambia Police Force (GPF) have concluded a one-year training program dubbed the Gender Promotion Initiative (GPI) organised by the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Force (DCAF).

Officials said the training which aimed at building the leadership and operational capacities of 20 female officers in GPF, is part of a broader project focused on promoting gender equality and empowering women for senior roles within the GPF.

Speaking at the forum, Ken Isaac, head of DCAF office in Banjul spoke at length on the significance of the initiative, claiming that the initiative aimed at supporting the female officers of the GPF to develop gender mainstream policy, interpersonal and motivational skills, practical exercise on leadership and mentoring.

He added: “This initiative aims to support your promotions and enhance your professional development within the GPF. We will coordinate with senior management and the IGP for a formal event at the end, where certificates will be awarded. So far, 15 of you have been promoted, thus we hope this will grow.”

He thanked the participants for their passion and commitment, saying: “The average exam mark was 89% which was excellent. Importantly, ASP Binta Njie, achieved a remarkable 100%.”

For his part, Ebrima Bah, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) said the initiative underscores their commitment to a more inclusive Gambia Police Force through gender mainstreaming. He thanked the participants for their dedication to the program, adding: “It has provided valuable insights and skills.”

The agenda of the Promotion Initiative, he went on, is a foundation for positive change geared towards empowering the participants to become champions in understanding our communities.

AIG Bah to the female officers: “As  leaders, your example is vital and that is why we encourage more senior female officers to support gender equality in nation-building, challenge stereotypes and create an environment that values diversity. I want you all to strive hard and become a beacon of positive change, fostering equality and integrity within the Gambia Police Force.”

Bill Priestley, International Consultant and Amie Nyassi, the Police Commissioner of Banjul both urged the participants to make best of the knowledge gained during the training and to become agents of change in promoting gender mainstreaming in the country and beyond.
