His Excellency Zhao Shangsen, the Political Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in The Gambia, has officially inaugurated the second Chinese Language and STEM Corner at the Latrikunda Sabiji Upper and Senior Secondary School.

The event, held on Friday, June 20, 2025, also celebrated the "International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations" and "International Chinese Language Day."

The China Corner at Latrikunda Sabiji Upper and Senior Secondary School is the second project initiated by the Chinese Embassy, following the first China Corner that was opened at Nusrat Senior Secondary School in January 2020. The event also included awards for winners of painting competitions.

During the ceremony, Deputy Ambassador Zhao highlighted that in 2013, His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, proposed the concept of building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind. He explained that the idea provides China’s response to the pressing question of what kind of world to built and how it should be constructed.

In line with the spirit of building a community with a shared future for Mankind, he said, President Xi proposed the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) in 2023, adding: “The GCI

advocates for respect for the diversity of civilizations, common values of humanity, the importance of inheriting and innovating civilizations, and robust international people-to-people exchanges and cooperation.”

In the same spirit of the Global Civilization Initiative and the concept of Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind, he added, “both initiatives were reinforced by a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in June 2024, proclaiming June 10th as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. This day aims to raise awareness of the value of diversity among civilizations and promote dialogue, mutual respect, tolerance, and global solidarity.”

According to him, Tuesday, June 10, 2025, marked the first International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, further claiming that UNESCO designated April 20 as the UN Chinese Language Day in 2010.

Ismaila Ceesay, the Principal of the school, indicated that the inauguration of the China Corner aligns with the global celebration of the 2025 International Chinese Language Day, as well as the spirit of the International Day for Civilizational Dialogue.

He added: “The Chinese Corner is a sanctuary where language transcends borders, a place where calligraphy meets curiosity and the wisdom of Confucius resonates in every interaction. The Chinese Corner invites students to reflect on the richness of Chinese culture, embrace the discipline of language learning, and experience the world through exchange.”

He thanked the embassy for what he described as a ‘laudable initiative that builds a bridge between the school and the embassy for the future.’
