ChildFund The Gambia on Wednesday donated 1000 solar light pieces and two 40-feet containers loaded with supplementary textbooks to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) for onward distribution to schools across the regions.

The donation, which was part of the ChildFund ‘Gifts in Kind’ program, was meant to complement their ongoing programmes working to improve the performance of children through reading and writing skills.

Musukuta Komma, ChildFund Country Director, reminded that to explore the world, one must have to read saying reading cannot be substituted for anything.

She encouraged the students to be curious and develop a culture of reading and that the books donated should be complementary to their compulsory textbooks.

The selection, she added, was very diligent and they shared a long list with MoBSE to ensure that whichever book they were selecting was going to complement the existing textbooks for each of the subjects for which they have brought the books.

She assured that ChildFund would work with the Ministry to ensure that the books are distributed to the schools.

She also informed that communities that have libraries would be strengthened with those books.

“Whoever reads books in the library should make sure to return them for others to also benefit from them.”

Alieu Mendy, manager of the Dingding Yiriwa Federation called on students to read more to enhance their knowledge and and skills.

Mendy reiterated the importance of books and that most of the times, the books could be misused because control in the libraries is lost.

To that end, he called on beneficiaries to make the best use of the books especially the solar lights, which he added, could help them during their studies either at school or their homes.

Ensa Bojang, Senior Education Officer, MoBSE, while thanking ChildFund for the gestures, assured that the materials would be extended to schools across the region.
